Do you want to know what the best high chairs for counter height tables are? Then you’ve come to the right place because I’ve reviewed the top five counter height high chairs on the market. Not all homeowners have standard-sized dinner tables. Some homes (like mine) have high counters and as a result, you’ll need a baby high chair that can adjust to the height of your counter.
Mealtime with your baby shouldn’t be difficult because of the differences in the height of your counter and your baby’s high chair. As a first-time father, I quickly realized that feeding my daughter without a proper high chair was an exercise in futility. But feeding your little one with the incorrect high chair height can also be difficult.
You don’t want to stand up every two minutes to retrieve items from the counter or bend over to feed your baby because the high chair is too low. So you’ll need a high chair that either has the right height or one you can adjust. Let’s take a look at which high chairs are the best for such a scenario and how to pick the best one.

How to Choose the Best High Chair for Counter Height Tables
There are plenty of high chair brands on the market but how do you pick the right one for your high counter tables? Before you consider the height of the chair you must first look at the safety features of the product. Will it keep your baby secure in the seat during meal times?
After you’ve established the safety features of the high chair, then you can look at features such as height adjustment, and design. In this next section, I’ll talk about all the important features you should consider when shopping for such a high chair.
Safety
The first feature I suggest looking at is the safety specifications of your high chair. I would never allow my daughter to sit in a high chair that wobbles or one where she can push the tray out easily.
Since the chair may be higher due to the height of your countertops you want to make sure your baby can’t get out of the seat. The high chair must have a secure safety harness to prevent your baby from falling out of the high chair.
All high chairs must have a harness or some form of restraint according to high chair safety standards. Most high chairs have a five-point harness that is similar to the ones you find on baby car seats.
With the five-point harness, the shoulder straps come down and clip into the two buckles that come from the sides and wrap around your baby’s waist. These buckles are joined by a single button release located between your baby’s legs.
Your kid would have to be a master escape artist to get out of this five-point harness. The five-point harness is to prevent babies from craning their necks or leaning forward. It also prevents them from bumping their heads on the tray in front of them.
There are also three-point harnesses or crotch restraints that don’t have shoulder straps. These harnesses are ideal for toddlers that have already developed their sitting skills.
If your baby’s high chair has wheels make sure they lock so that the chair doesn’t move if your baby starts rocking in his or her chair seat.
Size
Parents with small kitchens may get frustrated if there’s a large high chair in the way all the time. But sizing your high chair isn’t simply for the sake of saving floor space. You have to make sure your baby will fit into the high chair and that the product has the correct weight capacity you’re looking for.
For safety purposes, you should never put a baby in a high chair if your child exceeds the weight recommendations. The chair may not be able to handle the weight or it could topple over if your child starts rocking in the chair.
Furthermore, you should ensure that the high chair fits perfectly under your counter height table especially if it doesn’t have a tray. You also want a high chair that’s compact when it’s folded so that it doesn’t take up storage space.
Before buying a high chair make sure you look at the dimensions of the product so you can determine whether your baby will fit into it and the chair will fit into your space.
Material
There are plenty of reasons to consider what the high chair is made from. You don’t want to put your baby in a high chair that’s made with toxic products.
The fabric that the chair is made from should be non-toxic so that it doesn’t cause rashes. This fabric should also be soft and comfortable for your baby to sit on and it mustn’t chafe his or her skin. The high chair’s fabric should also be highly durable and easy to clean.
For easy maintenance pick a high chair that has removable seat covers so you can wash them easily.
The frame of the high chair must be sturdy and durable. If it’s made from wood, make sure it’s treated so that you don’t have to deal with wood rot. On the other hand, if the frame is made with steel, make sure it’s stainless steel so that it won’t corrode over time.
All the hardware that’s keeping the chair together must also be durable and hidden so it doesn’t harm your baby.
Most high chair brands make their eating trays BPA-free so that it’s safe for your baby to eat off of. And lastly, the harness of the high chair must be made with strong material that won’t tear over time.
Adjustable Height Feature
Some baby high chairs do have height adjustment capabilities but not all of them do. You want a chair that can be adjusted to any table height so that it makes feeding time easier.
What’s more, many high chair manufacturers have included other adjustment features so your high chair can be converted when your baby starts getting taller. Choose a high chair that allows you to convert the chair into a booster chair so your toddler can sit comfortably at your high rise countertop
Design of the High Chair Tray
The design of the tray is important because it can be difficult getting your baby into the seat when there’s a tray in the way. Ideally, you want a tray that you can remove or swivel out of the way so you can place your baby into the seat without hassle.
You also want a removable tray and dishwasher safe so you don’t have to spend time scrubbing food off of it. For me, swiveling trays are extremely convenient because I can move the tray out of the way with one hand and feed my baby with the other if need be.
Furthermore, you should look for a high chair that has an adjustable feature for the tray so you can lower or heighten it. Most high chair trays have sections where you can slot bottles or sippy cups into so that they don’t fall over.
There are counter height high chair models that have magnetic bowls and plates so your little one can’t move the dishes while he or she is eating. This magnetic feature comes in handy especially if you have a baby that loves to pick items up and throw them.
A High Chair with an Adjustable Footrest
A footrest is a feature you shouldn’t compromise on when shopping for a high chair. There are many benefits that a footrest provides your little one such as the following:
- Provides back support
- Maintains proper seating position
- Keeps legs still while feeding your child
- Extra support for the knees
- Provides comfort
Choose a high chair that comes with an adjustable footrest so you can lower or heighten it according to your child’s height. Some high chairs come with a pre-attached footrest or you can buy an attachable one.
A footrest keeps your baby’s body stable in the chair so he or she can concentrate more on eating their food correctly. Since the footrest provides comfort your child won’t be as fidgety and will be able to stay in the chair for extended periods.
Reclining Feature
Some high chairs have a reclining feature but this is a feature for infants who can’t sit up by themselves yet. Reclining high chairs can typically be adjusted to toddler seats when your baby can sit by themselves.
Another reason why you should consider getting a reclining high chair is that it allows you to feed your infant formula in a bottle while lying on his or her back. It would be difficult to feed an infant a bottle if he or she is sitting up.
Portability
Will you be seating your baby in the high chair at home or do you want to take it with you on holiday or to restaurants that have high counter tables? If you want to travel with your high chair make sure you pick one that’s portable.
A portable high chair can fold up easily so it can fit in the trunk of your car. After all, you don’t want to dismantle the high chair simply to travel with it. Foldable high chairs are also easier to store so when your baby is not using his or her chair you can store it in a closet without it taking up too much space.
Another portable feature you should consider when buying a high chair for a counter height table is wheels. Sometimes the wheels can come in handy when you want to push the high chair closer to the counter.
Some portable high chairs don’t have legs. Instead, these high chairs lock onto a table to keep it stable. On the other hand, these high chairs can’t be attached to glass tables or ones that are thin. Additionally, these hook-on high chairs may not be suitable for heavier children.
On the other hand, a hook-on high chair is compact and can fold up for easy transportation or storage. Take a look at this YouTube video to see how to hook a high chair to your table.
Final Thoughts
So what high chairs work well with counter height tables? Well, if you look at my guide you’ll see that high chairs that have adjustable heights are perfect for high-rise countertops. You also want a high chair that has wheels so you can push it easily into position by your dinner table.
If you have an infant you may want to consider getting a high chair that reclines so you can bottle-feed your child easily while sitting at your high counter table. Another feature you shouldn’t compromise on is a swiveling tray that you can move out of the way easily.
But most importantly you must always look at the safety features first before buying your high chair. Ensure that it has a safety harness and that the plastic tray and all other materials are made from non-toxic product.
Will you go for the Graco product below, my top recommendation? 🙂
